Realism

task 1:

The story resembles realism because it first of all uses a lot of details discribing how the how the people felt and the suroundings. It also shows the womens true feelings, at first she is sad but then she realizes that she is free and is glad that her husband died, because now she can do what she wants and she is not tied down. I think that in a way this story is beautiful because she is so over joyed that her husband is dead, im not saying that its beautiful that people die, but the freedom she felt is. But then her husband isnt really dead and she dies of shock that she isnt free.

Task 2:

this story is defiently realism, it is very harsh and real. Its sad that this kind of stuff happended, but it did and people need to remember they jsut cant run away from the past. But this story really stood out because it is very detailed about how the kid was abussed and treated it does not have anything very happy in it. Except teh end when he feels enlighted, but it is harsh reality or it was reality back then, and that is why it is realism. The writer doesnt try to cover up the bac things, well ok the whole story is horrbile, but he reaches out to the reader and makes them feel the pain this boy felt. I think he wrote this to show people that life was not all peachy keen back then and to make people apprieciate what they have today. I thik the writter is trying to make people feel bad that this happended, even though we cant do anything about it in this time of day. It still sends a message about how wrong everythign was then and that we should be thankful that it still isnt like that.

Task 3:

Im going to pick Alpha Dog, which is a true story that got made into a movie. It is about drugs and kidnapping, this guy owns money to this other dude and they dude steals the guys little brother holding him ransome for the money. They treat the kid like he is one of them and try to get him feeling comfortable, then they kill him for no apparent reason. I think that this is an example of realism because first of all it is a true story and it is ruthless, these people kill an 15 year old kid over money, nothing NOTHING is worth killing anybody especially money, and to a kid too. It is a very detailed movie, its very cruel. The sad thing is this stuff happends a lot too, it isnt a joke people let money and drugs run their lives at the cost of other lives. But all the guys involved got life in prison, but that doesnt give the kid his life back. This is a very touchy movie and very realistic, well of course it is because it really happened.

Dark Romanticism

Task 1:

I think that it is a little bit of both, I think that all people have potential to be good and bad. I think it is the choices that you make, but there is always a little voice in your head telling you the right thing to do. So I think a little bit of both is true. That not all people are good some choose to take a bad path in life.

Task 2:

read the black cat

Task 3:

The Black cat was a very dark story, but it started out as the guy lovign animals and havign this cat that he oh so very loved. Then one day he just hated it and cut one of its eyes out. Then a couple days latter he had another weird crazy spell and hung the cat, he started seeing some aparations of the cat he killed. Then one day he finds another cat and it looked almost exactally like his old cat, he took it home and once again started hating it. While trying to kill the cat he killed his wife and then he almost got away with it, but the cat was in the wall he had put his wife, and started meowing.

I think that this is defenitaly a dark romantic piece of writing because the hate came out of him, his intuition, he didnt really expect it. The dark Romatics believed that not everyone is pure because people do have bad thoughts and the transcendentalism thought is that everyone is pure and all your thoguth are directly from god and you should act upon them. But the Dark Romantics say that that is not true because if we acted on all of are thoughts lots of bad things would happen, because not all thoughts are pure.

Task 4.

read the raven

Task 5:

I really like the raven as a piece of literature it really speaks out to you and is easy enought to understand. It is romantic because you have to have imagination the think that the bird is talking to you and is actually there. I think personally that the raven is nto real and it is a fragment of his imagination, telling him that he will never get over his loss and he will never be happy agian and so on and so forth. But the way that that is Dark Romantic is because it is his mind telling him that he wont get over it and he wont be happy and that right there is not a very pure and helpful thought for the person it is bad and unencuraging. So that kind of wipes out the whole god speaks through the thoughts and everything is pure. The part that I think is weird is when the bird lands on the athena statue and says nevermore, therefore saying you will have no wisdom again you will basically drive yurself insane over the lost of lenore. But i enjoying reading the raven.

Transcendentalism

Nature

I personally really like what his thoughts are about nature and everything being so pure the purest. It is a very interesting thought that we are all connected because god reaches out through all living creatures and that we are all connected in that way, even if we dotn realize it. Because I think we are connected in some way spiritually, not really by god but because we are all living breathing creatures with the basic mind comparments and feeling. I really think he gets through to people with this piece of writing like in the beginning he talks about nobody is ever alone, even if they are in a room by themselves with nobody around, you are not alone. Because I really dotn think anybody is ever alone, maybe in the physical sense but not mental or spirtual sense. I like it how he talks about connecting with the plants and the vegetables and not just thinking abou them as food or brush but that they have a real soul and connection with everything else, as are humans. I think that this man got the big picture that no matter what you are you are special in your own way and that every living think is beautiful and equal in every way.

Self-Reliance

So basically what this piece of writing is saying, is that you need to listen to your heart and your intuition, when doing anything. Like when you are out with people and you are trying to fit in and doing things just to be "cool," that it is wrong because you are not listening to yourself but to others. He thinks that since god shows himself through living things, and you dont listen to your insides that you are wrong because you are not listening to god. I personally think that you really should listen to your intuition and heart, I dont think you should get pushed around by society, be your own person and fight to be it. You shouldent try to go with the "in" cround because they are acuatlly very out. I really like the idea he gets out in this writing i think it is very true and that people should take it to the heart. I really like the part were he talks about trusting thy self and that every heart vibrates to the iron sting. I think that is a stong paragraph and very true. This writing is not that best kind of hard to understand at first but once you get teh jist of it, it really speaks out, loud and clear.

Resistance to Civil Goverment:

This man had the right idea, I completley agree with his idea that the goverment is trying to hold us down because god speaks through everyone, and by trying to contol us they are squashing god. The fact the he went to jail and did his time and didnt give in is very admirable. I agree that you should not have others do the work of living for you, even though these days it would be hard to break off because they wouldnt let you. But I think that this man believed so strongly in his idea that it really makes you want to do the same thing. I would not have paid those stupid taxes either and would have gone to jail too. I like the way he thinks sees himself free even when he is in jail, because he is more free maybe not phisaclly but mentally he is. I respect his thoughts and agree very strongly that people need to follow their believes at all costs.

American Romaticism

Task 1

I read Rip Van Winkle.

Task 2

The story Rip Van Winkle was a good example of Romaticism, Rip Van Winkle is an average man who has a run donw farm and is poor. But he helps a lot of people and everyone like him, "
Whenever he went dodging about the village, he was surrounded
by a troop of them, hanging on his skirts, clambering on his back, and
playing a thousand tricks on him with impunity; and not a dog would bark
at him throughout the neighborhood."

See he woudl get followed around and bugged by the children. But Rip Van Winkle liked to go to the mountains and hunt for little animals in solatary. One day he was up in the Mountains and saw a man walking with liquer on his back, he helped him and they ended up with this group of odd fellows. He passes out and when he walks up he is old and it is 20 years later. But to him it had only been one night. The reason that that is romatic is because it is imagination it is out of the ordinary, its a tale that cant be proven but if you believe then you believe, the story does not ahve a logical reason at all and that is why it is romatic.

Task 3

The poem is basically just talking about death and how you shouldent be afraid of it, because it happens to everyone, and its natural and you will be returning to the earth that we come from, also that everyone is equal in death and you will not be alone. What is romantic about the poem is that its very imaginative it uses lots of different types of speech to create an image, and it talks about the equality of everyone.

Task 4

In this poem he is talking about how his job in the rope factory is boring, but then he starts imagining what the rope could be used for, the one that stood out to me was the one were he talks about a tight rope walker. I think this poem is a very good example of Romaticism because he is a man who uses his imagination to make his job more exiting, which is what Romaticism is all about.

Task 5

I think that the picture is Romantic because it has imagination, because the sky is not usually red and the red is reflecting into the water, which is uterly impossible. So that is why i think that it is Romantic.

The Rationalists

TASK ONE

The Rationalists and the Puritans had very different views on how the world works, Puritans believed that everything was made from god and god hated all humans, except the blessed ones (saints), and that everyone was a sinner, and was going to hell. The Rationalists believed that everything could be explained through science, they believed that god was real, but he put things on this earth to be discovered and questioned. They believed that science and mathematics could explain the way things work and why things happen, and as for the Puritans thought that God put things there and they shouldent be questioned and things should be left alone.
A good example for a Puritan thought, would be the theory of dinosaurs being put on this earth to trick us and test our faith to God.
A good example for a Puritan thought, is a debate still going on till this day, the big boom theory, the theory that states that the earth was created in a matter of science, not god.

TASK TWO
Read the autobiography

TASK THREE

I think that Benjamin Franklin was a great Rationalist, is because he questioned how he grew up in a very tightly religious household and upbringing, and thought that there is a god but he will grace you if you do good. He tried to spread his thoughts about religion around to the young people. I think he did a good job in explaining his thoughts of god and goodness to the men.

Example from text
Revolving this project in my mind, as to be undertaken hereafter, when my circumstances should afford me the necessary leisure, I put down from time to time, on pieces of paper, such thoughts as occurr'd to me respecting it. Most of these are lost; but I find one purporting to be the substance of an intended creed) containing, as I thought, the essentials of every known religion, and being free of every thing that might shock the professors of any religion.

TASK FOUR

1. ENJOY- Enjoy what you have dont question what you dont.
2. LOVE- dont hate, but love all beings in one way or another
3. VIOLENCE- violence does not solve anything, ever.
4. CURIOUS- be curious of things and expand your personal thoughts and mind.
5. KIND- be kind to all, and all will be to you.
6. RESPECT- respect all things around you, and others possessions.
7. DWELLING- dont dwell on the bad but only the good.
8. WASTING- Do not waste time.
9.LAW- dont do wrong, only right.
10. CHEATING- dont cheat through life, be honest and caring.
11. RUSH- dont rush things, but dont slow them down
12. CHANCES- take chances that might improve your being.
13. HAPPINESS- always make sure you are happy.

I think if i follow those simple rules I have put on myself, that I will be a better person and have a happy life. I don't think anyone is perfect but you can always improve yourself, and work on being better than you were. But yes I think if i follow these simple guidelines I will be a more improved me and be all together happy with myself, not perfect, but happy and not harming others.
